Why Reflexology Gives More Benefits Than Just a One-Off Treat

Karen giving a reflexology treatment.

It’s World Reflexology Week, so this feels like the perfect time to talk about something I often see in the treatment room.

Many people book their first reflexology treatment because they’re curious, they’ve been given a voucher, or they simply fancy an hour to relax.

And then, somewhere between taking their shoes off and getting up from the couch afterwards, they realise:

“I should do this more often.”

Because reflexology doesn’t have to be something you save for when you’re exhausted, stressed or desperately in need of a break.

It can simply become part of looking after yourself.

You don’t have to wait until you’re running on empty

We’re very good at waiting until something is wrong before we give ourselves permission to slow down.

We wait until we’re exhausted before we rest.

Until our shoulders are up around our ears before we book a massage.

Until we’ve had several bad nights before we think about doing something to help us unwind.

But wellbeing doesn’t have to be reactive.

Sometimes the nicest thing you can do for yourself is create a little breathing space before you desperately need it.

For some of my clients, reflexology becomes exactly that.

A regular hour where there’s nothing to organise, nowhere to rush to and nobody needing anything from them.

What does reflexology actually involve?

During a reflexology treatment, gentle pressure is applied to different reflex areas of the feet.

The idea behind reflexology is that areas of the feet correspond with different parts of the body.

If you’re interested in finding out a little more about where the different reflex points are located, you can take a look at the Association of Reflexologists’ foot map.

But you don’t need to understand all the reflex points to enjoy the treatment.

You simply lie back, get comfortable and allow yourself to switch off for a while.

Treatments are adapted to you, and the pressure shouldn’t feel painful.

Some people chat.

Some fall asleep.

Some are surprised by just how deeply relaxed they feel.

There really isn’t a “right” way to experience reflexology.

The benefits of regular Reflexology gives for relaxation and Wellbeing

One of the main reasons people return for reflexology is very simple:

they like the benefits that reflexology gives them in the way they feel afterwards.

Clients often describe feeling calmer, lighter or more relaxed.

Reflexology is commonly used to support relaxation, release tension and promote an overall sense of wellbeing.

And when life is busy, having something in the diary that is entirely about slowing down can be valuable in itself.

Rather than waiting until you feel completely frazzled, a regular treatment can become your reminder to stop.

A little self-care between appointments

You can also use some simple reflexology techniques at home.

One of my favourites is the solar plexus reflex, which is lovely when you want to create a little pause in your day.

Try this:

Find the centre of the palm of one hand.

Use the thumb of your opposite hand to apply comfortable pressure to this point.

Take a slow breath in.

As you breathe out, gently release some of the pressure.

Repeat for several slow breaths, then swap hands.

It takes less than a minute, so it’s something you can use at your desk, before bed or whenever you notice yourself rushing from one thing to the next.

Sometimes the smallest pause can make a difference.

How often should you have reflexology?

There isn’t one perfect answer.

Some people enjoy a treatment every few weeks.

Others book monthly.

Some come more frequently for a short period and then spread their appointments out.

And plenty of people simply book whenever they feel they need that bit of time for themselves.

Your treatments should fit your life, not become another thing on the to-do list.

World Reflexology Week

World Reflexology Week is a lovely opportunity to raise awareness of reflexology, but for me it’s also a reminder of something much simpler.

Taking care of yourself doesn’t always need to involve making huge changes.

Sometimes it’s an hour on a comfortable treatment couch.

Sometimes it’s a few quiet breaths with your thumb pressed into the centre of your palm.

Sometimes it’s simply deciding:

“I’m going to make a little more space for myself.”

And you don’t have to wait until you’re stressed, exhausted or struggling to do it.
